Coe-tech/Robe UK, exclusive UK distributors for the fast growing Czech moving light brand Robe, has supplied Dublin-based distribution company Aquarius with a large quantity of Robe intelligent lighting fixtures for Lacey’s, a 1500 capacity club at the Carrickdale Hotel, Dundalk, Republic of Ireland.

This is the first Robe installation in Ireland since Northampton-based Coe-tech took on the UK and Irish distribution in July this year.

The lighting rig for the newly revamped club was designed by Wayne Winstanley and installed by the Carrickdale’s own technical team led by Brian O’Keeffe.

The space consists of a large, single multi-purpose room that’s also utilised as a Sunday carvery and an occasional restaurant with food served on mobile trolleys. It is also used as a venue for a miscellany of events including business conferences and weddings – and the lighting scheme was required to be as versatile and adaptable as the usage.

In the ceiling, Leisure Engineering supplied four polygonal-shaped truss pieces, all of which move, and each of which contains a Syncro centrepiece and is clad with a gauze screen along it’s bottom. As the trusses move upwards into the roof they also angle outwards, and imbibe the room with a tent-like appearance. As they are lowered downwards, the gauze surfaces shift position and form ideal projection ‘sails’.

The brief was to design and supply a versatile and interesting lighting rig that would work for full-on club environments as well as for more decorous occasions – like Sunday lunch. The Robe fixtures fitted the bill and the budget perfectly!

Winstanley chose eight Robe Scan 1200 XSs for their power and brightness, plus 12 Robe MS Zoom 250s and 16 Beam 250s to introduce a diverse selection of colours and effects. He also used over 80 Ariane recessed, colour-changing down-lighters – also supplied by Coe-tech - around the room. These are mounted in the ceiling and coves, on the walls and around the bar.

All lighting is controlled by an Avolites Pearl 2000 console, programmed by Coe-tech’s Nathan Wan, who also oversaw the commissioning for Coe-tech.

As well as enveloping the room in a swirl of energy and resonance when in full club mode, combined with the environmentals, the Robe effects create a stunning visual impact on walk-in.

Wayne Winstanley comments, “I’ve worked with Coe-tech many times in the past and know their quality of service and back up is excellent, however it’s the first time I’ve used Robe kit. I was keen to give it a go, and so far I’m well impressed”.

Date of issue: 31st October 2002.
